Brand's work has indicated that the trackways of vertebrates in the sandstone were most probably made underwater. This conclusion is substantiated not only by the nature of the tracks themselves, but by the behavior of the animals evidenced in the trackways. These unique features cannot be duplicated on dry sand. This conclusion is remarkable in that it challenges not only the interpretation of the Coconino sandstone, but that of trackway-bearing sands worldwide.
