Researchers can get much lower readings (as low as 0.015 pmc) on carbon sources that are not of demonstrably organic origin (e.g., precambrian graphite), or carbon from which the C-14 has been removed by mass spectrometry. The evidence we have strongly indicates that most of the C-14 observed in fossils is not contamination, but from real residual C-14.
